Cp4052

This is a capstone course for the Sustainable Cities minor at Georgia Institute of Technology. This semester, a group of 10 students come together to come up with creative solutions to tackle urban problems. They focus on the connectivity in Westside Atlanta, and presented a sustainable solution: A Shared Use Sustainable Path Connecting Bankhead MARTA to the Heart of Grove Park

 

The object of this course is to produce several deliverables based on sustainable development:

  • ​Leverage transportation assets in the area to provide alternatives to residents and visitors of Grove Park to/from the Bankhead Marta Station

  • Enhance community cohesion in Grove Park to leverage existing social and economic resources such as transportation hubs, community facilities, and local businesses

  • Link existing communal spaces and natural resources in the community to interact and connect

  • Enhance neighborhood interconnectivity to the economic center, social services, parks, the rec center, and other green paths that are valuable assets in the community

  • Increase sustainable connectivity as platform to spark local economic opportunities

The object of this course is to produce several deliverables based on sustainable development:

  • Research on the Grove Park Neighborhood, using design/environmental, social, and economic approach

  • Spatial Analysis (GIS)

  • Planning & Design

  • A web portal to display results and make recommendations

  • An academic paper with research methods and results 

  • An infographic poster

Class Professor

Dr. Jairo Garcia is an expert in sustainable urban development, carbon mitigation, and climate adaptation and resilience. His experience includes performing spatial data analysis for ecological assessments and to identify climate vulnerabilities and risks analysis. Dr. Garcia is the former Director of Climate Policies and Renewables with the City of Atlanta. Dr. Garcia received the Individual Climate Leadership Award by the EPA in 2017. This award recognized Dr. Garcia’s leadership in addressing climate change and engaging organizations, peers, and partners.
